The new Schertz Recreation Center is slated to open in February and George Logan can hardly wait. “This recreation center will provide a daily opportunity for community wellness and leisure and is a reflection of the health consciousness of Schertz residents,” said the city’s Parks and Recreation Department Director. “The center was approved by the citizens of Schertz through the 2006 bond issue and will meet and exceed the expectations of the community….big time!” Logan emphasized. “The contractor, architects and staff have met every two weeks during the construction period and we will have a great building for the City of Schertz and our residents,” the Parks and Recreation Director said. The 30,733 square-foot recreation building is located at 721 Westchester Drive, just east of the intersection of Elbel Road and Schertz Parkway. The $7.2 million complex has recreational facilities and equipment, administrative offices, access roads, parking, and landscaping and sits on eight acres located just behind the new City Public Library facility on Schertz Parkway. The recreational facilities include a full-court gymnasium for basketball, volleyball, floor hockey, free play room, dodge ball, and other open space indoor games. A Playscape play room for children will be adjacent to the toddler and infant care facilities. There will also be a teen center with teen programs, computers, video games, a climbing wall, cardio and fitness equipment area; aerobics room; Pilates exercise room; “Movies in Motion” room which includes riding and spinning down roadways in-sync with a movie feature down country lanes; and a multi-purpose room. The YMCA of Greater San Antonio will manage the recreation center for Schertz and will provide membership discounts for Schertz Residents and city employees. The YMCA has a scholarship program and will work with families and individuals who wish to join but have hardships or other financial difficulties.
