Following preliminary work, construction to widen FM 3009 from I-35 to FM 2252 at the Garden Ridge city limits kicked-off in early November and is expected to continue through 2012. The $22.6 million project, which has been delayed from its original starting date in June, will widen the highway from two to four lanes with a raised median, with left turn lanes at intersections. Two overpasses will be added so motorists can bypass the two railroad crossings that cross FM 3009. The project is expected to take three years to finish, with a completion date of October 2012. The widening of FM 3009 will help alleviate early morning and rush-hour traffic congestion on the roadway, which is used by thousands of motorists every day going to work, shopping or restaurants. Work on the roadway will be done simultaneously in two sections, from I-35 to Red Iron and from FM 2252 to Red Iron.
